Commentary on "Joab: David's Weak Strongman"

JONATHAN BILIMA

Day 6: Thursday, November 18, 2010 - Joab's Last Stand

Overview

There are several statements that stand out in today’s lesson:

“Joab’s unconfessed past has finally caught up with him.”

“Joab forgets, however, that the altar provides asylum only for those who have killed unwittingly”

And finally the closing question:

However scheming, ambitious, and deceitful Joab was, everything he did could have been forgiven by the Lord had Joab come to God in faith, humility, and repentance. What about you and your defects? Forgiveness is there if you are willing to claim it for yourself.

Observations

There is a teaching within Adventist theology that states that God will only forgive sins that you confess and for which you ask forgiveness. Outside of Christ we stand condemned due to sins of omission and sins of commission. Sins that we wittingly do and those we do on accident and even without our knowing them to be sins condemn us.

When we put our faith in Jesus, however, He forgives us of them all. Because of Jesus, I am forever forgiven of my sins—past, present and future. Because of Jesus, I have been made righteous, and He remembers my sins no more. Because of Jesus, there aren’t any books in heaven that record my sins.
