Commentary on "Joab: David's Weak Strongman"

JONATHAN BILIMA

Day 1: Sabbath Afternoon, November 13, 2010 - Introduction

Overview

Today’s reading serves as an introduction to Joab. As the reading states, Joab’s story is filled with dangerous politics and murder. Joab’s character was merely an expression of his sinful nature.

Observations

When we read the stories of murderous men like Joab it is easy at times to look at their lives and say to ourselves, “I have more character than him” or “my morals and values would never allow me to stoop as low.”  The hard truth is that we all are born with a sinful nature that has unlimited potential to do evil. Thankfully, Jesus came and died for our sin so that by believing in His finished work we may be made alive spiritually and given a new nature. The Bible tells us:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We literally are made new! We have passed from death to life eternal at that moment.

In this new reality, Jesus seals us with the Holy Spirit who ensures our salvation and also empowers us to live out lives that express this new reality. With the Holy Spirit’s enabling, we develop the fruit of the Spirit which is love. This fruit is an outward expression of what Jesus has done with our hearts.
