Commentary on "Caleb: Living With the Wait"

ROSS COOPER

Day 7: Friday, October 8, 2010 - Further Study

You need the Holy Spirit to receive your inheritance

Romans 8:9-16 (Emphasis mine): You, however, are not of the flesh but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, your bodies are dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you. Consequently, brothers, we have an obligation-but it is not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you continually put to death the activities of the body, you will live. For all who are led by God's Spirit are God's children. For you have not received a spirit of slavery that leads you into fear again. Instead, you have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

You are purchased and sealed with the Holy Spirit

1Co 6:19–20: You know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God, don't you? You do not belong to yourselves, because you were bought for a price. Therefore, glorify God with your bodies.

Eph 4:30: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption.

In conclusion

Caleb had fully devoted himself to God, and by faith Caleb walked hand in hand with God. Caleb was able to live apart from the world, was able to enter the Promised Land, and was able to conquer the land given to him. He gained a great inheritance.

We are called to devote our lives to God; we are told to throw self and selfishishness and all of our lives at the foot of the Cross. The blood of Christ Jesus purchased us, so our body is a sanctuary for Him to live in. God is not a co-pilot; God is the Captain of our lives. When we wholly lay ourselves open as a living sacrifice and let God take the throne of our lives, He sends the Holy Spirit to live in us. The Holy Spirit seals us, and heals our own spirit so that we can “worship God in Spirit and in truth.”

When we walk in faith, we walk knowing that God is in us, and that nothing that’s fashioned against us will stand.

We can still be meek like Caleb, but we will be conquerors like Caleb too through the ongoing and majestic work of the Holy Spirit.

Remember this in closing:

Heb 10:15–17: The Holy Spirit also assures us of this. For he said, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts and will write them on their minds," and, "I will never again remember their sins and their lawless deeds."

2nd Corinthians 3:17-18: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Lord's Spirit is, there is freedom. As all of us reflect the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces, we are being transformed into the same image with ever-increasing glory by the Lord's Spirit.

Be like Caleb; walk in assurance of God everyday of your life, and you will find peace.

In Christ,

Ross
