Day 7: Friday, December 3, 2010 - Further Study

Jeremiah 31:31-34 (The Promise of a New Covenant)

The LORD says, "The time is coming when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the old covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of Egypt. Although I was like a husband to them, they did not keep that covenant. The new covenant that I will make with the people of Israel will be this: I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. None of them will have to teach a neighbor to know the LORD, because all will know me, from the least to the greatest. I will forgive their sins and I will no longer remember their wrongs. I, the LORD, have spoken."

Hebrews 8:7-13 (The New Covenant and Why We Need It) Emphasis Mine

If there had been nothing wrong with the first covenant, there would have been no need for a second one. But God finds fault with his people when he says, "The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will draw up a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand and led them out of Egypt. They were not faithful to the covenant I made with them, and so I paid no attention to them. Now, this is the covenant that I will make with the people of Israel in the days to come, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. None of them will have to teach their friends or tell their neighbors, 'Know the Lord.' For they will all know me, from the least to the greatest. I will forgive their sins and will no longer remember their wrongs." By speaking of a new covenant, God has made the first one old; and anything that becomes old and worn out will soon disappear.

Hebrews was written many years ago, a great many, and the author says the old covenant is Old because God himself made it old. Not only that but he goes on to say that what is old and worn out will soon disappear.

The old covenant was on two tablets of stone, and it pointed forward towards the one who would usher in the new covenant. Jesus Christ.

“Do not suppose that I have come to do away with the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to do away with them but to complete them.” Matthew 5:17 Goodspeed New Testament

When did Jesus Complete, as in fulfill all that was prophesied of his personal work on earth?

As soon as Jesus had taken the wine, He said, "It is finished." And then, bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit. John 19:30 Emphasis Mine

As if he had said: “I have executed the great designs of the AlmightyI have satisfied the demands of his justiceI have accomplished all that was written in the prophets, and suffered the utmost malice of my enemies; and now the way to the holy of holies is made manifest through my blood.” An awful, yet a glorious finish. Through this tragical death God is reconciled to man, and the kingdom of heaven opened to every believing soul. Clarke Commentary
