Commentary on "Redemption for Jew and Gentile"

DALE RATZLAFF

Day 3: Monday, August 30, 2010 - Elected

1. The Lesson does not mention Romans 9:16 which reads, “So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.” Describe, as best you can, the following:

  1. The man who runs is represented by________________________________________________

  2. The man who wills is represented by________________________________________________

  3. Who determines the recipients of salvation? __________________________________________

  4. Why do you think the lesson skipped Romans 9:16? ___________________________________

2. The Lesson says, “We’ve all been elected to be saved, not lost.” And then it lists two verses to support this. Read each verse in context and decide if the stated verse really supports the author’s statement that “we’ve all been elected to be saved, not lost.” Respond with “Yes” or “No” after reading each verse.

  1. Eph. 1:4,5 _________

  2. 2 Pet. 1:10 _________

3. The lesson seeks to illustrate how people with differences can all be members of one church. It lists: “race, cast, ethnicity, color or gender.” However, this list really misses the REAL issue in the early church to which Paul’s letters to the Romans and Galatians, and Luke’s book of Acts bring into sharp focus. The real issue was: Do the Gentiles have to keep the law?

“But certain ones of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, stood up, saying, ‘It is necessary to circumcise them, and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses’” (Acts 15:5).

To put the same issues into today's context respond to the following:

  1. List the truths are necessary for the gospel evangelist to communicate to the unbelieving person, regardless of race and/or culture, so that when he/she accepts the communicated truth the person is saved (has the assurance of salvation)?

  2. What other truths, if any, are necessary to communicate to the person who believes in addition to what is communicated in No. 1 above, for a person to remain in a saved condition, ready for either death or Christ’s coming?

  3. Is it necessary to teach doctrines or behavioral changes today that were not taught by Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles? If so, what would they be?

  4. If you listed anything in “c” above, can you support your answer from the Bible alone?

  5. Can you support your answer from the epistles to the young Gentile churches alone?
