Commentary on "Redemption for Jew and Gentile"

DALE RATZLAFF

Day 1: Sabbath Afternoon, August 28, 2010 - Introduction

The lesson quarterly presents an acceptable study of Romans 9 regarding election. It is clear that Adventists tend to be more Arminian and less Calvinistic in their view of election. Throughout the history of the Christian church many sincere Christians have held differing views on this topic. I do not believe that one’s view of election should be a point of division among us as long as one understands that without God’s grace we could never respond in faith to the gospel. Each day we will attempt to bring in some of the bigger questions that relate to the gospel going to both the Jew and Gentile.

The lesson topic, “Redemption for Jew and Gentiles” only circles the REAL issues involved. The revelation that the gospel of Christ could go to the Gentiles, while they were still Gentiles, shook the early church to its foundation. To rightly understand Romans 9 we must see it pictured on the larger canvas of the theological issues involved. For example:

  1. What did it mean to Peter when the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles gathered in the home of Cornelius as recorded in Act 10?

  2. Why did the Holy Spirit feel it necessary to repeat in detail the whole incident of Acts 10 over again in Acts 11?

  3. What issues were involved in the first church council recorded in Acts 15 and what was the conclusion?

  4. What were the issues that caused so much controversy in the early church that are evident in all of Paul’s epistles?
