Commentary on "Clothed in Christ"

ANE EDWARDS

Day 2: Sunday June 19, 2011 - Heirs According to the Promise

OVERVIEW

Today's lesson describes our struggle to understand salvation and what it truly means to be clothed in Christ's righteousness. The lesson teaches it means that "His life, His perfection, and His character" can be claimed as our own, "...not because of status, gender, or nationality, but only through faith in Christ."

OBSERVATIONS

The lesson ends, by teaching:

"Christians who refuse to change their old ways, their old habits, and their old lifestyle need to look in the mirror at what they are really clothed in."

I wonder, how will looking in the mirror help me with this struggle? When I look in a mirror, all I am capable of seeing is my clothing of sinful flesh.  Looking in a mirror would only serve to increase my utter hopelessness.

I would argue that Christians who refuse to change their old ways, simply need to look at Jesus. When my focus is on Him ... I WILL become changed, it is a promise (see 2 Cor. 3:18).

SUMMARY

  1. Another result of accepting the gospel is we are now clothed in Christ's righteousness.
  2. In order for my transformation to be effective, I need to look to Jesus.
  3. Looking at myself gets me no where.
