Commentary on "The Widow of Zarephath: The Leap of Faith"

RICHARD PEIFER

Day 7: Friday, December 10, 2010 - Further Study

Overview

As always, an EGW quotation cements the week’s teaching. However, this lesson adds three more scenarios for consideration.

Problems

The three scenarios confirm the Adventist fixation with behavior-based value judgments. In every case the Adventist position is this: Faith must result in better behavior, else it must not be faith.

It is far better to tell the truth, but they won’t do it because their entire belief system would crumble to dust if they admitted this one reality.

Faith is the only way to appropriate God’s grace. This is why I asserted at the beginning that the hardest thing you and I will ever do is to rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ. As children of Adam we will not accept our inability to influence our status with God. After salvation, as children of God we still battle with indwelling sin as the flesh attempts to take control of the relationship.

Faith, based on Jesus’ complete sufficiency in time and eternity, says, “I choose to rest in Jesus. I choose to rest in the fact that I am a forgiven person. I choose to rest in the fact that I already have eternal life and am seated with Jesus in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). And, therefore, I choose to give myself in this moment, whether good or bad, to Him to be used as He chooses.”

This is true rest. This is true faith.
