Commentary on "The Antichrist (2 Thess. 2:1–12)"

CAREL STEVENSON

Day 2: Sunday, September 16, 2012 - The Problem (2 Thess. 2:1–3)

In today’s lesson the author states “There is no clear evidence in the passage that the church was asking questions about the second coming of Jesus.” This is either dishonest scholarship or the result of verse 11 of this passage and I honestly do not know what else to say about it.

He later writes, “Paul doesn’t identify the specific source of their confusion. Perhaps it hadn’t even been revealed to him.” Please understand that I am not trying to make the author say more than he intended here, but let me explain how I take this statement. My assumption is that as an Adventist the author has a low view of scripture. Yes, he may claim to believe it is infallible, but not inerrant. With that in mind, when he states that perhaps Paul didn’t know, I see a red flag. A better rendering of verse 2 is to see that those deceiving the Thessalonian church had come with a threefold deception. They were teaching that they had received a new message from the Spirit of God and had clinched it with a forged letter from Paul himself. Please prayerfully and consider the parallels that we see here to the “spirit of prophesy” which has changed the teachings of God’s word, including end time events, the Gospel, and even who Jesus is and what he did for us!

The author also states regarding the Thessalonians that “They had failed to heed Jesus’ warning about chasing after signs of His return.” This is not the case, they believed that if they were in the Day of the Lord they had missed being gathered together with Christ which would mean that either Paul had been wrong or they were not among the elect of Christ. The reason that an Adventist must fabricate a statement like this one is to shore up their false end-time teachings predominately originated or supported by Ellen G. White. We do not know the day or the hour, true, but we do know a great deal about the Day of the Lord and we know that it is not for the church.
