Commentary on "Worship in Genesis: Two Classes of Worshipers"

PHIL HARRIS

Day 2: Sunday, June 26, 2011 - Worship in Eden

Overview

Today’s lesson attempts to address the contrast of what worshiping God would have been like before sin entered into the world with the account of when Cain and Able brought their offerings and placed them before a holy God.

Observations

In Genesis 3:8-20 we have the account of where God is speaking directly with both Adam and Eve with the implication that this was a normal and regular occurrence. While it would be logical to assume that they worshiped God during these visits with their Creator that is simply not a topic addressed in these early chapters of Genesis.

Rather, we to need to move forward and approach the topic of worshiping God within the context of our condition as sinners where sin separates us from the very presence of God. The real question must be; what must happen before a sinner can come before a holy God and worship him?

Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Then the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought: I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn’t the bush burning up? When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!” “Here I am,” he answered. Do not come closer,” He said. “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then He continued, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. (Ex 3:1-6 HCSB)

The key to understanding the need for your sins to be covered before coming into the presence of God is to understand that God is holy and when you are there with him you are on holy ground. Since this is the topic for tomorrow, we will examine then how a sinner must approach and worship God.
