Day 3: Monday, May 23, 2011 - The Accuser and the Accused

(Read Zechariah 3:1-7)

Zechariah was not only a prophet but he was also a priest. It seems fitting that when God wanted to call His people back to a passionate devotion to Himself, that He would first address the spiritual leaders, the priests, and it shows God’s loving concern that he would use a leader to speak to a leader. In this vision, Zechariah was shown that the spiritual leaders were covered with the same spiritual apathy and disobedience as the rest of the people. All of the people, including their leaders, were in an identical state of disobedience.

In the vision, Zechariah saw Joshua the High Priest, clothed in filthy garments, standing before the Angel of the Lord and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Rev. 12:10). The word, Satan, in the Old Testament is rendered as adversary (1 King 11; 1 Sam 29:4) and as opponent (Num. 22:22-32). In the book of Job, Satan is described as one of the ‘sons of God’ who regularly appears before God in heaven to bring accusations against God’s people. Jesus said that Satan is a liar (John 8:44), and when the evil one speaks to us, he is lying. He says things like, “You’re such a failure; God couldn’t love you” or “Has God said?” (in other words, the Bible doesn’t really mean what it is saying!) However, when Satan speaks to God about us, he’s very often right! Satan’s accusations against Joshua were true; Joshua was clothed in filthy garments. Joshua was a sinner, but God wasn’t going to reject His people. God had a plan to remove the sin and cleanse His people. The Lord rebuked Satan, Zech 3:2:

“And the LORD said to Satan, ‘The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?’” NKJV

God silenced Satan’s accusations, but God welcomes our cry, Ps 55:17:

“He will hear my voice.” NASU
