Commentary on "Divine Provision for Anxiety""

PHIL HARRIS

Day 7: Friday, January 7, 2011 - Further Study

In John 14:27 Jesus is referring to the peace promised to Adam when he first sinned with specific reference to the promise given to him in Genesis 3:15. Sin introduced immediate death of the human spirit which resulted in the inevitable sickness, decay and death of our physical bodies along with enmity between mankind and God. Jesus death on the cross totally paid the penalty for sin. Those who believe the gospel message of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection receive all of the benefits of this atonement. That is, they receive complete and eternal removal of the penalty of death along with eternal peace with God. This is the true peace the world cannot offer. Where there is peace with God there remains no fear.

The gospel message of Jesus Christ is the answer to all of the situations posed in Friday’s lesson.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5 ESV)
