Commentary on "Abiathar: The Priest"

STEVE PITCHER

Day 5: Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - Abiathar's Choice

Today’s lesson, Abiathar’s Choice, is one of the most puzzling lessons in this quarterly. The suggested reading of 1 Kings 1:1-8 provides no information with which to answer the question. There has been much conjecture on Abiathar’s defection (see Barnes Notes on this passage) but conjecture falls into the realm of speculation (guessing), and we must be careful not to read into scripture information that is not there.

The question on the bottom of the page for today’s lesson (page 84 of the Teacher’s Quarterly) is not taking into consideration the day of Pentecost, accounted in the book of Acts chapter 2. It was on that day that the Holy Spirit was poured out on believers, and who fills believers today. Christians need not worry about tradition or inadvertently brushing off what appears to be tradition, when filled with the Holy Spirit. Filled with the Holy Spirit, combined with a good understanding of the Word of God, believers can come to an unusual level of agreement on how to continue preaching the cross and growing the kingdom of God.

Summary

  1. Conjecture = Speculation = Guessing
  2. Be filled with the Holy Spirit.
  3. Know the Word of God.
