Commentary on "Abigail: No Victim of Circumstances"

LESLIE MARTIN

Day 6: Thursday, October 28, 2010 - In and Out

David listened to Abigail’s words, recognizing that the Lord had sent her to stop him from doing a terrible thing, (1 Samuel 25:32) and he accepted her gifts and went back to his camp. When Abigail returned home, Nabal was in the middle of his drunken celebration so Abigail refrained from telling him of the near disaster until the next morning. When Nabal sobered up and heard what had happened “…his heart died within him so that he became as a stone. And about ten days later, it happened that the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.” 1 Samuel 25:37,38

God judged Nabal for his malicious and evil treatment of David and everyone else in his life. David did not have to seek revenge or retribution for himself; God is able to deal with injustice and wickedness. Compare Nabal’s life and death to Jesus’ parable of the wealthy fool and the application from that parable that He makes to our lives. (Luke 12:16-34)
