Commentary on "Justified by Faith"
Day 4: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - Grace and Justification
Overview
Justification by faith is and always has been under attack by the enemies of the Cross. Christianity as we know it stands or falls on this doctrine. The Bible teaches us justification by faith but Adventism as shown in today’s lesson teaches justification by obedience.
Observations
The author states that “reconversion” can be a daily experience where justification takes place as a repeatable experience. This idea makes justification progressive as opposed to being complete. The fact is our justification is not based on subjective experience but it is secured by an objective declaration by God. Christ’s perfect righteousness and finished work is our only foundation for justification NOT our continuing work or present virtue.
It is a completely unbiblical idea that we are reconverted every day, or that we are repeatedly justified. When a person accepts Jesus’ blood shed on the cross for his sin, all his sins—past, present, and future—are forgiven. The person does not fall out of salvation when he sins; rather, he is brought back to repentance by the already-indwelling Holy Spirit and restored to a surrendered relationship.
This point of the security of salvation is completely misunderstood in this lesson because the complete lack of understanding of the new birth within the Adventist framework of the nature of man having no immaterial spirit.
