Commentary on "Planning Ahead"
Day 4: Tuesday, November 3, 2009
The subject for today’s lesson deals with the sins of ignorance, those sins which were done unintentionally. The next day will deal with the sins of defiance, drawing a comparison between these two kinds of sins.
Positive aspects
These sins that apparently don’t deserve the name of “sin” were still sins and need atonement. That’s important because God does not overlook or close his eyes to these sins. They are still called sins. Another positive aspect is the encouragement from Ellen White’s quote to those who doubt their conversion because they are still sinning.
Negative aspects
In the Adventist scheme of the end times comes a period in which believers will no longer have a mediator between God and man, when Jesus will no longer be the intercessor. What happens with these sins that need atonement? They are still sins, as Adventists admit in today’s lesson, and according to their own standards Jesus Christ’s work as a mediator is essential. The lessons from today do not address this problem at all because it easily becomes evident that only if people will be perfect and without sin can a believer hope to arrive at the second coming in a state of grace. While in the recent decades there is a trend in the SDA church to shun perfectionism, questions regarding sins after Christ no longer mediates for the believers are embarrassing.
