Commentary on "Cities of Refuge"

MARK MARTIN

Day 2: Sunday, December 20, 2009

In today’s lesson we are asked to read Numbers 33 and to answer a few questions.

Why do you think the Lord had Moses write down their “starting points, stage by stage” and what purpose could that serve?

There are 42 stages from the Exodus to the Promised Land, from slavery to freedom, and from strife to peace. There are also 42 generations from Abraham to Christ, from the Law to Grace, from slavery to freedom, from strife to peace. The purpose that writing these all down could serve is that everything in the Old Testament is a foreshadowing of better things to come; a foreshadowing of Christ and of a better covenant.

What important spiritual principle is found in Numbers 33:50-56?

Disobedience has consequences.

From what you know of the history of ancient Israel after they had settled the land, why was this commandment about dealing with these peoples so important?

Several instances of disobedience or lack of trust by Israel have led to significant problems for Israel and the rest of the world.

Summary

  1. Am I holding on to the ‘shadow of Christ’ or Christ Himself?
  2. The New Covenant of Christ is far better than the Old Covenant of Law.
  3. Disobedience has consequences. Those who are in Christ that sin are still His, but there are still consequences that we suffer for our disobedience. We also might suffer not due to our disobedience – but rather that God may be glorified.
